Shiv Sena (UBT) is experiencing a significant internal upheaval as two of its Lok Sabha members, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, have announced their allegiance to the Eknath Shinde-led faction of the party. This move further consolidates the growing rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, with a total of six MPs now aligning with the dissident group, thereby intensifying the political crisis within the party.
Nagesh Patil Ashtikar explained that his decision to switch allegiance was influenced by the lack of development funds for his constituency and increasing frustration over the negative remarks directed at rebel MPs. He emphasized that his shift does not imply a departure from Shiv Sena’s ideology; rather, he believes joining the Shinde faction will allow him to better serve his constituents. Similarly, Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar confirmed his crossover, although he stated he would continue to consult with his supporters before determining his political strategy. He affirmed that despite the political rift, he would refrain from speaking against Uddhav Thackeray or Aaditya Thackeray.
In response to the defections, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut asserted that some rebel MPs remain in touch with the party and are apprehensive about potential backlash from their constituents. Raut indicated that the party is open to discussions with those considering a return. Meanwhile, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction is pursuing disciplinary measures against the six MPs, having issued show-cause notices and considering action under the anti-defection law. The party is also contemplating approaching the Lok Sabha Speaker to seek disqualification of the defectors if they do not respond adequately.
The rebellion has heightened political tensions in Maharashtra, with both factions exchanging accusations. Amidst this turmoil, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed allegations of its involvement in encouraging these defections, further complicating the political landscape. The internal strife within Shiv Sena (UBT) underscores the challenges faced by Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership as he navigates this period of significant discord.
