In an effort to conserve fuel, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has ordered a reduction in the number of vehicles in his official convoy. Speaking to the media after being sworn in as the MLA from Kolkata’s Bhabanipur at the state legislative assembly, Adhikari emphasized the importance of setting an example by following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity measures. “I instructed the Directorate of Security to ensure that my convoy does not exceed the minimum number of vehicles required. We must avoid any excess,” Adhikari stated.
Adhikari’s decision aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s recent appeal to the nation to address economic challenges arising from the global spike in crude oil prices, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The Prime Minister urged citizens to adopt various cost-saving practices, such as carpooling, using public transportation, working from home, reducing gold purchases, and limiting foreign travel.
“The Prime Minister has consistently guided us on the right path. While it is not obligatory for everyone to adhere to these measures, those who believe in their significance will follow his lead,” Adhikari remarked. The initiative to cut down on vehicle use is expected to be adopted by all Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs and ministers within the state government.
Adhikari arrived at the assembly with a convoy of five vehicles, a significant reduction from the usual eight to ten cars that typically accompany the chief minister through the city. This move reflects a broader commitment by state officials to heed the Prime Minister’s advice and contribute to the national effort in tackling economic uncertainties.
