India is actively engaging with US authorities to address concerns stemming from new American visa regulations that may impact Indian students and academic visitors. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a media briefing on Friday, emphasized that New Delhi is keeping a close eye on the situation and will persist in advocating for its citizens whenever they encounter challenges in the US.
The US Department of Homeland Security has introduced changes that enforce stricter residency rules on F, J, and I category visas. These visas pertain to international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. The updated framework now requires non-immigrant visa holders in these categories to adhere to fixed periods of stay, moving away from a previous system that allowed longer stays without ongoing federal supervision.
Additionally, the grace period for F visa holders after completing their studies has been shortened. Students must now exit the country, transfer to another institution, or modify their immigration status within 30 days, as opposed to the previously allowed 60 days.
Indian officials have acknowledged that visa and immigration policies fall under the jurisdiction of sovereign nations. Nonetheless, they have reiterated their dedication to assisting Indian citizens in navigating the updated rules and minimizing any potential difficulties they may face.
