The West Bengal government has made a significant move by allocating financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to each of the 60 Rath Yatra committees across the state. This funding aims to aid in the restoration and maintenance of historic chariots, marking a novel approach as it is the first time the state has directly contributed to the Rath Yatra festivities.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the urgent need for renovation of many traditional wooden chariots, some of which are centuries old. He encouraged the committees to utilize the funds effectively for repairs and preservation efforts. This financial support is a part of the state’s broader commitment to maintaining cultural heritage and supporting religious events.
In addition to the financial aid, the state has planned a unique gesture to enhance the Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district. Helicopters will shower flower petals on the devotees participating in the 30-km procession, creating a memorable experience for the pilgrims. Furthermore, Seva Kendras will be set up at 75 fair locations to provide essential services, including medical aid, police assistance, and drinking water, ensuring the well-being and safety of participants.
The government’s initiative to support Rath Yatra celebrations is part of a larger vision to expand financial backing to more committees in the future. Alongside this, West Bengal is investing a substantial ₹1,000 crore over the next three years to develop the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This project aims to enhance pilgrimage experiences, restore historic temples, and boost religious tourism, thereby strengthening the state’s cultural and spiritual landscape.
