Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia in a move aimed at strengthening India’s strategic, economic, and maritime ties with one of its key partners in the Indo-Pacific region. Both nations, which rank among the largest democracies in this area and are members of the G20, are eager to enhance cooperation across various sectors such as trade, technology, healthcare, defense, and maritime security.
This diplomatic engagement follows the visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to India in January 2025. During that visit, the two countries commemorated 75 years of diplomatic relations and signed numerous agreements focusing on health, digital cooperation, and cultural exchanges. Despite their historical ties and shared interests, bilateral trade between the two nations hovers around $30 billion, and both sides are keen to explore new economic opportunities. India, in particular, is looking to boost its investments in Indonesia, with a focus on critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security.
Digital collaboration is anticipated to be a central theme during Modi’s visit. Indonesia has expressed interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives, and both countries are considering partnerships in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small enterprises. Enhancing these digital ties could pave the way for significant advancements in these sectors.
Another major area of focus will be maritime security, particularly in the strategic Strait of Malacca. Plans are underway to bolster naval cooperation, improve maritime domain awareness, and expand defense-industrial partnerships. As Indonesia seeks to diversify its defense suppliers, new opportunities could emerge for India’s defense sector to play a more significant role.
The visit is also expected to foster stronger people-to-people connections by enhancing academic, business, and cultural partnerships. This initiative aims to build a more comprehensive and enduring relationship between India and Indonesia, ensuring that the collaboration extends beyond governmental agreements to benefit the broader populations of both nations.
