US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has embarked on a four-day visit to India, arriving on Saturday with the objective of enhancing strategic partnerships and expanding collaboration across various sectors including trade, defense, energy, and technology. The visit is set against the backdrop of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, involving India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, which will also see a foreign ministers’ meeting soon.
During his stay, Rubio is slated to engage in bilateral talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Key discussions are anticipated to revolve around security in the Indo-Pacific region, defense cooperation, and critical technologies such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. These discussions come amid escalating concerns over China’s increasing regional influence.
Trade relations will also be a significant topic, particularly in light of previous tensions stemming from President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on Indian exports. Both nations are expected to explore avenues to bolster economic cooperation and minimize trade friction. The energy sector will be another focal point, with the United States aiming to increase its crude oil and LNG exports to India, while simultaneously navigating India’s ongoing procurement of discounted Russian oil.
Defense ties are expected to be a cornerstone of the talks, as India currently operates several American defense platforms, including Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. Discussions will likely include joint production and collaboration in advanced defense and space technologies. Rubio’s itinerary also includes visits to Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, with a stop at the Missionaries of Charity headquarters in Kolkata, founded by Mother Teresa.
